Another retro DOS port of a classic arcade game. This port is interesting, because it has more colors than the Genesis version (256 vs. 64), but choppier animation and the sound is a bit crunchy. Yet it retains a more authentic arcade "look" alongside the additional levels and options of the 16-bit edition. The hit detection is a little off in this version, increasing the difficulty (I fair even worse with the other two characters). The Bizzarians also seem to run away much more easily.

"Beginner Mode" is one of the three available modes.

Note that Death Adder Jr. has silver armor this time around.

  • @XSC3 The backgrounds seem to look more detailed on this one to me

  • @TheOldschool81 yeah, 22 to be exact, but whose counting? I (and millions of others) love movies and books that came out even longer ago. what's wrong with liking old games?

  • Oh, and forget about PCI sound cards. Most are complete crap. The only ones really worth having are the Yamaha YMF724 and equivalent sound cards. I've already got a SoundBlaster Pro 2.0 accompanied by an Ensoniq Soundscape in my Pentium 1 and a SoundBlaster Vibra16 in my 316SX(all are ISA sound cards). I refuse to use anything that does not contain a real Yamaha YMF262 on the sound card(or an ASIC implementation like my SoundBlaster 16 Value or all of the Yamaha YMF7xx sound cards).

  • @1xWertzui - I've got a computer with a 120MHz Pentium 1 for my DOS gaming needs and will move over Golden Axe to that computer. If things still don't work correctly, I have an old Packard Bell Legend 316SX running a 25MHz AMD 386SX. It might make Golden Axe very sluggish, on the other hand. I only ever played Star Wars X-Wing on the 316SX and the computer REALLY struggles to play the game with minimal graphical detail. Golden Axe should fare better, though. I'll test it out and report back

  • @Ace9921 Make a FAT16 partition on your hard drive, put your DOS games there, make an MS-DOS startup disk, tinker in BIOS to boot from floppy, get an old PCI soundcard, + some drivers, tinker Autoexec.bat and Config.sys on floppy, then let it go. Use MOSLO.EXE if something runs too fast. Or at lest thats how I used to play DOS games on my new PC. Later I used to play natively under WinXP with the help of WDMSound and Speedset.exe. Now I have a 486 or DOSbox if I am lazy.

  • @ATARI800XLfan It works even on a 8mhz 8088, so...
