Born into a kurdish community living near Mount Ararat, Canê carries on that age-old Kurdish tradition of sung poetry. She is on of its most autentic representatives.

Forced to marry at the age of fourteen, she rebelled against both her family and society and decided to earn her living as a singer. Persecuted in Turkey, she decided, after an assoult that left her seriously injured, to go into self-imposed exile in Germany and continue her career there. Canê possesses an extraordinary voice. She sings the traditional songs of her native Kurdistan with a great authenticity.

This Song, Delal is from Nordkurdistan (from the area between Dersim and Bingol and Amed) and about Delal (is a kurdish name, meaning "beautiful", "handsome") .

Delal*

Delal my delal
I climed to the snow-clad
summit of Serhed in Bingol
I gazed at Qerejdagh* where the
partidge has her nest
i learned that my dear love has gone
abroad, woe is me!
oh villagers, neighbours,
who now sees his beautiful dark eyes?
i should not exist
i should not exist, i should not exist
Delal my delal
don't go to the distance,
distance is not (good) for us

Delal my delal
Delal, let them burn the high
pastures opposite Bingol
have a good figure, and gold, silver
and jewels at my neck
The pain from which we suffer,
my love and I
Is so serious that even the
the best doctor has no cure
The Yezidi boy made his way
back to the sheep pastures
admired the beauty of his fingers
gold and olive brown
playing the flute
Delal my delal
don't go to the distance,
distance is not (good) for us
i should not exist

Delal my delal
Delal let me not outlive you
My Delal mounted a thoroughbred
chestnut horse
I am anxious and worried about my Delal
The Neighbours daughter brought me the news:
"Your young man is well
he has brought your dowry"
Delal, this morning i got up early,
i left my bed unhappy
Filled with pain and sorrow,
wretched, weeping and sighing

Since i gave my dear young
man kisses as reward
and suddenly i realised that Delal,
so desired, is gone
My boy's the little darling
of his father and mother
If my eyes don't see Delal
am the orphan, in a pitiful condition
Oh villagers and neighbours
didn't know heartache was like this
Thought it was the end of the world
Spring have become winter for us
we have pitched our black tents
i should not exist
i should not exist
Delal my delal
don't go to the distance,
distance is not (good) for us

* Delal (is a kurdish name, meaning "beautiful", "handsome") .
* Qerejdagh is a mountain near Amed (Diyarbakir)
