Marian Anderson (February 27, 1897 April 8, 1993) was an American contralto and one of the most celebrated singers of the twentieth century. She possessed a rich and vibrant voice with an intrinsic quality of beauty. Most of her singing career was spent performing in concert and recital in major music venues and with major orchestras throughout the United States and Europe between 1925-1965. Although she was offered contracts to perform roles with many important European opera companies, Anderson declined all of these, preferring to perform in concert and recital only. She did, however, perform opera arias within her concerts and recitals. She made many recordings that reflected her broad performance repertoire of everything from concert literature to lieder to opera to traditional American songs and spirituals

I find this song very agreeable and lovely. Its melody is simple, but conveys what it wants and, if sung as beautifully as here, is most pleasant to one's ears. :-)

I just did a large poster for March's Women's History Month. Marian was included along with Emily Dickinson and Georgia O'Keeffe. So it covers the arts of singing, writing and painting. I'm the graphic designer for the Attorney General of WA state and am on the Diversity group. Thanks for posting this as I had not really known of her and I'm 51. What a beautiful voice.

Marian Anderson was heavily involved with her church's choir, the Union Baptist Church, and like most black baptist churches, their worship services included negro spirituals, hymns and other gospel songs.

I have more by her that I will post eventually. Glad you liked it.

Her voice darkened quite early and I especially like these from before the change. She said that she was not raised in an environment with spirituals and had to learn them as an adult.

Wow it's hard to believe that Roger.

She would have been an ideal ''Bess'' in Gershwins opera.

She would have indeed! I will have to see if she ever recorded any songs from it.
