Malaysian Opposition Anwar Ibrahim Arrested

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was arrested earlier today on allegation of sodomy. The arrest is setting the stage for a political showdown that could further rattle the country's financial markets.

STORY:
The former deputy premier had agreed to meet police today on a sodomy complaint lodged by a former aide, but the arrest came about an hour before he was due for questioning.

Anwar, who is leading a charge by the opposition to seize power by September, is fighting the sodomy accusation. It looks to be a replay of scenes from a decade ago when he was jailed for sodomy and corruption.

Earlier in the day, before the arrest, Anwar had this to say to reporters.

"Of course, I appeal to them to exercise patience and let us deal with it according to the standard procedures and you challenge them every ground if it is found. But I don't think it is fair for me to pre-empt the police action. For now I am taking it professionally seeking their attention to conduct their investigations professionally. I will give my fullest cooperation."

Anwar's supporters say the sodomy allegation is an attempt by Premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's government to prevent the opposition from gaining ground.

The arrest is likely to spark more tremors in financial markets, which have groaned under the weight of a protracted political drama that includes allegations of sex and murder against a senior government politician.

Authorities sealed off roads to the police headquarters where Anwar was held. They are bracing for a possible repeat of the 1998 protests where Anwar's arrest brought tens of thousands onto the streets.

I, have without a single problem AT ALL with Malays governing the country. To me DSAI is clearly the better quality PM for Malays and the country than the current one and his deputy and i strongly believe that most of our Malay counterparts do realize this reality as well.

Talk about Ketua Melayu, Kehilangan Kuasa Melayu, but is not DSAI a Melayu as well...? The problem now is the less capable Melayu in Kuasa is working hard to prevent DSAI to PutraJaya.

8 March election, the chinese and indian had supported the better Melayu, Melayu tidak hilang kuasa.

I will support DSAI even if he is offered to be the president of UMNO - why? - Because i strongly believe he can and will change UMNO for the betterment of Malays & Malaysia.

Sadly, the one who so "gila kuasa" is the one who has the power but fear to death of losing it......and losing it means kehilangan kekayaan that supposedly belong to the Rakyat

Aku x pham betul politik kat M'sia ni. Dah jadi mcm India. PM,TPM, Ketua Polis dan AG dah x boleh percaya lagi. Semua kaki belit dan tipu rakyat. Sanggup buat apa saja semata2 utk terus berkuasa mmrintah M'sia. Cukupla tu, dah 50 thun dah mmrintah, dah kaya pun. Cuba buat mcm US, Klu kalah trima sjala. Buat apa nak tipu undi, guna media, sekat hak bsuara, dan mcm2 lgi. Profesional la sikit. Korang nak M'sia ni dprintah oleh anak branak/mnantu korang je ke? Jangan tamak la. Jangan penting diri!!!

DSN tak tahu menahu, tapi mengaku "mangsa liwat" pi jumpa dia, mintaq nasihat bertangan sejuk. Macam bontot sediri tak boleh jaga, nak pak menteri tolong tengok2kan.

Bekas menteri dan anak tak berasa hairan. Macam pisang berbuah dua kali. Bekas menteri juga berkata DSN tak akan jadi PM, tarik balik sokongan. Berkait ke?
