Ali Pasha of Janina was an Albanian "bandit" (irregular) soldier of the Ottoman Empire, an invador that had occupied Albania in the 13th cetury and divided it in four regions ("Vilajete") for administrative purposes. He gained popularity for his power, cunningness, ruthlessness, and strategical thinking and some time down his service, he got appointed the Vezir of Epirus (one of the 4 Albanian Vilayets) by the Sultan (king) himself.

Just like Scanderbeg, he did not forget his people, identity, and the fact that his Albanian homeland had been under a ruthless foreign occupation for over 400 years. Once in power, he gained control over Epirus and was able to provide a safe heaven for its people.

Some Orthodox Albanians, like the Souliotes, did not obey him and they saw Ali Pasha as an Ottomanized Albanian, and therefore as an enemy. However, the Suliotes were driven by a Greek priest that would infiltrate ideas of important religion differences, instead of those of Blood Relations. In the end, the Suliotes realized that Ali Pasha was fighting for Albania and his religion was just a cover.

After all, the religion of every ALBANIAN is ALBANISM.

Vjen Fermani në Janinë

Në Janinë ferman po vjenë,
Asqerëtë po vijnë (x2)

Dil Ali Pasha përpara,
Dil Pasha se po vjen nata!

Këmbekryq mbi kanapenë,
Asqerëtë po vijnë.

Ali Pasha dili pritë,
Asqerëtë po vijnë.

Dil Ali Pasha përpara,
Dil Pasha se po vjen nata!

Në Turqi te (inaudible)
Asqerëtë po vijnë.

O veziri në Janinë
Fitove mbi tradhëtine!

EN: In Janina (Ioannina) the Enemy is Coming

In Janina the enemy is coming,
And its soldiers are approaching (x2)

Ali Pasha, let's go and stop them,
Let's go and stop them, the night is coming!

Cross-legged on your kingly seat,
The soldiers are approaching.

Ali Pasha cut their way,
The soldiers are approaching!

Ali Pasha, come let's face them,
Come Pasha, the night is falling!

In Turkey (inaudible)
The soldiers are approaching!
O Vezir of Janina!
You won over treachery!

Albanian (Chaonian) Polyphonic Chants are sang in a very ambiguous way sometimes, and might not make much sense to the audience that doesn't know about the event. The purpose of these songs is to mark a certain date in time and tell the story to the generations to come of what happened (sort of a short historical event in poetry).

In this case, Ali Pasha knows that the Turks were coming with an army that outnumbered the Albanians by many times, and was not like other times that he had fought them. He knew that there was no more hope! However, the Albanian soldiers still believed in him and encouraged him to fight and cut them off.

The end result of this war was a tragedy for the Albanians. They lost Epirus to the Turks, and a few years later to the Greeks.

The Souliotes continued fighting and eventually freed Epirus, but with the arrival of King Otto (Othon), they were first taken as the kings advisors... and then were refused their identity as Albanians. Now the Souliotes are considered "Greek HELLENIC Warriors" that freed their homeland, Greece!

As we see, Greek history is made 100s of years AFTER events take place, and when no one is there to testify against the Greek thesis.

The Souliotes now are extinct... Who will speak for them?

  • True todays greeks have no relation with us or ancient helens. The reason, cause you are a mixture of turks, asinas, africans and some of us even though itn should not be said. So you are right, you have no relation to Albanians who are the ancient people of Balkans, and neither to the Hellenes, which were a branch of the Illiro-Pellasgian people.
