Throughout Ireland both used vegetable oils and animal fats are collected, cleaned and delivered to Green Biofuels Ireland Ltd in tankers. The waste vegetable oils and fats are then pumped into one of GBIs storage tanks ready for processing which involves the chemical reaction of the fats with an alcohol (methanol) and a catalyst (KOH) to produce a renewable non fossil fuel that is known as biodiesel. The biodiesel then undergoes a series of washing steps before finally being distilled to produce clear biodiesel. This environmentally friendly fuel, which meets the rigorous European quality standards, is then collected from GBIL, blended with fossil fuel and distributed throughout forecourts nationally.

There are no changes required either to vehicle engines or to the current fuel supply chain infrastructure and logistics. GBILs feedstocks do not compete with the food chain and the annual biodiesel output, not only reduces Ireland's dependence on imported fossil fuels but also results in carbon emissions reduction of almost 90,000 tonnes every year
