This is a single drive starting inside the tropical forest and ending on the road amongst the livestock waiting to take over. On the way we see the work of transient squatters who secure the transformation in hope of a better life (which they rarely get). The road was cut to extract lumber, but it was not secured and no follow-up management plan seems to be in place, so, instead of a harvest of forest products, this will most likely result in the liquidation of the forest itself.
Following the 2007 destruction caused by Hurricane Felix in Nicaragua's Northern Moskitia (RAAN), we hoped that harvesting the fallen trees would help the forestry sector and related activities using the forested nature of the region. What we see here is different.. Extensive cattle ranching creates very few jobs, promotes semi-arid conditions and global warming.
