Volcanoes may be vital to life on Earth but they can also obliterate large portions of it. On Christmas Day 1953, 151 people died in theTangiwai Disaster, caused by an earlier eruption at Mt Ruapehu. The Tangiwai Disaster video plays in the Volcanoes gallery at Auckland Museum (see http://www.aucklandmuseum.com/volcanoes), open daily from 10am-5pm.

  • @endocondor there has, an early warning system on Mt ruapehu and also an alarm system upstream from the bridge
