Mangold takes out Red Bull World Series

American Mike Mangold has taken out the Red Bull Air Race World Series after finishing third in the final event on the race calendar in Perth today.

Although Frenchman Nicolas Ivanoff took podium honours in front of more than 200,000 spectators, it was Mangold who was the big winner after coming into the Perth race trailing leader Paul Bonhomme by just two points.

Mangold, the 2005 champ, beat Spain's Alejandro Maclean in a thrilling consolation final today to give him 47 points for the season.

This left him tied for first place with Bonhomme, who had a disappointing visit to Perth, finishing in fifth place.

But Mangold took out the title thanks to better results in elimination rounds, after both had the same number of first, second, third and fifth places this season.

Flying ace pipped to the post

The mother of all tie-breakers has ended a seven month sky-high battle and seen a Maidenhead pilot fall at the last hurdle.Paul Bonhomme, who trained at White Waltham Air Field, took to the heavens on Sunday for the climax of the Red Bull Air Race 2007 World Series.Expectations were flying high as he headed in to the sky over Perth in first place and with a two point lead over arch rival Mike Mangold.Born in the Canadian Red Cross Memorial Hospital in Taplow Mr Bonhomme grew up at his family home in River Gardens, Bray and lived in Paley Street before moving to Cambridgeshire two years ago.His father Colin Bonhomme, who lives in Ray Mead Road, was also a pilot and has been backing his son all the way.But when the dust settled this weekend American born Mangold had swooped in to level the points, forcing a tie-breaker to be called. Both had the same number of firsts, seconds, thirds, fourths and fifths as well as the same number of firsts in elimination rounds.

WA on a wing and a prayer

PERTH wants to secure the Red Bull Air Race on a long-term basis, Tourism Minister Sheila McHale says.

The Government is negotiating an extension of the international race at least until 2011. The minister said it had been the right decision to dump Rally Australia in favour of the air race, even though its future in Perth could not be guaranteed. She expects 300,000 people to turn out for today's race over the Swan River and says the public are voting with their feet. "That was absolutely the right decision to make,'' the minister said of the move that outraged WA's motor racing community. "There's no comparison in economic investment, there's no comparison in the interest, no comparison in the international exposure that Red Bull Air Race gives Perth. "This is a whopper of an event.'' But next year will be the last time the race is held in Perth unless a new contract is signed.
