Example: I was fired over an "email" was what I was told by my former employer. But that may not be the full truth, as just three weeks after, the company began laying off hundreds of people. So I need to respond to this firing/layoff better, or I will be flipping burgers within six months:-(

When you tell prospective employers why you were fired from your last job, make sure you keep it to a couple simple sentences. The more you talk, the less believable you'll sound. You want to give them a couple one liners that briefly sums up why you were let go. Don't give them tons of detail, just a few facts. " My previous company has restructured itself and as a result, let go of numerous employees".

I don't advocate lying.

A better choice might be to tell them the truth. Tell them what you know. "that you were fired for sending an email that spoke a different message than intended." But you might need to spice it up a bit and come off with what happened. Maybe you fired because you sent a joke to a colleague that got forwarded to your boss and she didn't think it was funny. Something like that. I think you just need to expose a little more about what happened than keeping it so mysterious.

  • I was a direct care worker who lost her job to medical error. Should I say "Lost job due to performance? My job at XYZ was a valuable experience. Unfortutnly, I trusted my team leader's judgment instead of contacting the nurse (The med's error that is partial truth). I learned that I need to trust my gut and make more independent decisions. I believed that I am wiser now. I am in a tricky situation. Thank you for your help.

  • I stayed 6 1/2 months on the job. Sigh,,,,

  • how about this, the employer terminated the employment contract.
