  • @dinto1 The mathematics show that the output of the multiplier at the receiver has frequency components centered around twice the carrier frequency. The low pass filter is needed to get rid of these high frequency components and capture the message signal. Note multiplying at the receiver with the same carrier yields m(t)cos(wt)*cos(wt)=m(t)/2+m(t­)*cos(2wt)/2. Need LPF to get rid of m(t)*cos(wt), where w is the carrier frequency in rads/sec and m(t) is the message. Hope this helps! Dr J
