(08/22/07) STAMFORD - A Stamford woman was inspired 14 years ago to create a volunteer organization that helps the visually impaired lead normal lives, and she hasn't earned a dime in the process. Claudette Tallon says she was inspired by her father, who was severely visually impaired, to create Services for the Blind of Fairfield County in 1993. She says even though her father had vision loss, he accomplished everything in his life he wanted to. Volunteers with the organization assist the visually impaired by reading, driving for them, balancing their checkbooks or just offering companionship. Some also go grocery shopping. Volunteers say the program is mutually beneficial and that they get a lot out of helping others. Tallon says the organization needs donations to reach out to other parts of the state as well as more volunteers, especially in the Bridgeport area.
