  • The engine at the beginning was probably switching onto a NE Regional train going thru to VA. NE Regionals heading south of DC need a diesel engine, as the electric engine that is used to haul the train from Boston to DC can't run on tracks without overhead lines- the NE corridor isn't electrified south of DC.
