  • ALL itv franchises should be revoked and a new set of itv companies should be given the chance to broadcast. I would be ecstatic if granada and carlton lose their right broadcast. They have destroyed ITV. and they should be punished. In the news article the itc chairman said that the winners are the viewers. That is absolute bull. ITV is crap at the moment it is getting worse!!!!

  • "The viewers will win." Oh how wrong he was.

  • This report is now on tv ark

  • @weirdnetwork Not sure if there's going to be another franchise round, but it's possible that one could be on the cards. STV and UTV's licences for example, are both said to be expiring within the next few years, around 2013 or 2014. If there's no franchise round, I guess the only way to opt out of a bidding war is to renew the licences without a contest. They've done that before several years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if they do it again.

  • @steve02045 I agree, although I'd keep Yorkshire and Meridian as they only produced mainly local stuff. Granada should have lost their contract in 1991 as we would have by now had NWT. Had Thames continued my first guess would have seen both them and LWT merge creating a super London franchise.

  • Is ITV still regionalised cause apart from the local news I see no region only programmes?

  • @steve02045 When you say ALL do you mean UTV/STV/Channel as well?

  • ITV Wales says they can nolonger produce the ITV Wales news as they are virtually no money left, according to BBC Wales Today.

Instead 3 companies are bidding and the panel will select one to make the news instead.

Apparently: ITN, UTV (with another consortium) and Tinopolis are candidates bidding.

  • Ofcom should call for another franchise round for ITV, that way Granada and Carlton could be automatically disqualified on poor production same for GMTV. Then North West TV and Thames could then takeover along with the retun of TV-AM.

  • I wonder if they will do another franchise bidding war? If so, could thames re-bid?

  • Thames, TVS and others left a lot of soul behind, and its the reason why we missed them - they closed at their peak. I reckon the ITV companies foresaw that Sky's multi-channel TV was just around the corner, meaning that advertising revenue would spread across the new TV licences the ITC was dishing out and ITV companies were starting to see less money. LWT looked to be screwed from the start of 1993, when Granada took a hold of it in 1994. The people in charge made their career out of it anyway
