Undergraduate Research at the University of Maine Farmington

For many college students, some of the most valuable lessons are the ones learned outside the classroom in research labs, at internships, conducting research out in the field, in a public school classroom, at a volunteer position, and on the job. Understanding this, we offer hands-on research opportunities that will help you connect your classroom studies to what could be your future work. What kinds of research are UMF students doing Conducting Damselfly assemblage research on fishless ponds, studying neuromuscular control in the claws of lobsters and crayfish, mapping of invasive aquatic plants, researching the feeding ecology of gulls in Maine, GIS mapping of Sugarloaf Ski Resort, examining the relationship of social status to risk taking in black-capped chickadees, monitoring lake water quality in Maine, and more. But research here also encompasses areas outside of science. Our students conduct research in economics, anthropology, early childhood education, marketing, computer science, psychology, music, literature, and more. Farmington's commitment to undergraduate research includes student fellowships and student scholarships. And each spring, Farmington holds a special day celebrating students' undergraduate research and creative achievements, our renowned Michael D. Wilson Symposium.
