I agree that you can see that in a number of films. However, when a girl these days talk about a man they want -- with descriptions of such damaging behavior -- they don't cite Pretty in Pink or Say Anything. They cite Twilight. And they were doing that well before the movie was made.

The writer is to certainly partially blame, but her story is also not unique, it fits into the larger pattern of the standard Hollywood themes. That is framing stalking and predatory, controlling or overprotected male behavior as "romantic" - even look at 80's comedies like Pretty in Pink or Say Anything - both filled with stalky behavior that's is meant to make people swoon.

It's interesting that the pro-feminist take is from a show created by a man while the more sexist gender stereotypes come from the book written by, and a film directed by a women.

The creator actually kept the colour difference on purpose... you can read about it in his FAQ's (which is linked from the video info)
