Directed by Chinese filmmaker Wang Quanan, Tuyas Marriage is set in the picturesque steppes of inner Mongolia. Tuya (Nan Yu), has struggled as a shepherd, as she fends for her family, a handicapped husband Bater, and two rambunctious children. When Tuya injures herself, destiny forces her to take the step of divorcing her husband in order to marry someone more affluent, in the desperate hope this suitor can help her fend for her children and ex-husband. The helpless wife does the needful and betroths herself to a wealthy oil tycoon who sets Bater up at a nursing home. Unfortunately, this sudden estrangement from the family unsettles Bater, and Tuya has to reconsider her decision. Winner of the Golden Bear at the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival, Tuyas Marriage explores the stark reality of rural 21st century China.
