its a Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba as a synthesis of his martial studies, philosophy, and religious beliefs. Ueshiba's goal was to create an art practitioners could use to defend themselves without injuring their attacker.

  • That is what I understand from it from reading books on the pholosophy of Aikido. I agree with you. If someone tried to kill me or my family I would kill them because I might not get a second chance to defend myself or them. But Morihei Ueshima would easily handle an armed opponent and disarm him with with love in his heart. Morihei said there are many paths up the mountain but only one pinnacle - love. Such an incredibly beautiful, effective art. What a remarkable man.

  • Damn! this reply was a long time comin'. Respect, all I'm saying is if someone is trying to kill me, I'm gonna beat his ass. I'm not trying to destroy life, I just wanna live. Harmony out the window. I'm not Batman.

  • The object or Aikido is to restore harmony. You do not restore harmony by hurting your attacker. His intention to attack you creates disharmony in the universe. You restore harmony by blending with his attack and neutralising. Each living creature has a spark of divinity within and it is wrong to kill maim and destroy life.
