On May 7, 2009, across the country, Native communities acknowledged "Children's Mental Health Awareness Day". With some Native communities suffering from 8-9 times the national suicide rate average, its a serious topic.
In Portland, Oregon, the Native American Rehabilitation Association, Inc. organized a mini powwow in Pioneer Courthouse Square, serving/honoring homeless youth. The event was a project of the Systems of Care program of NARA, Nak-Nu-Wit and was led by the youth leadership of that community program. Nak-Nu-Wit is the recipient of a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Awareness (SAMHSA) systems of care grant to build a culturally competent mental health program that includes the voice and input across the community.
