Robert Schumann
Vladimir Horowitz

"Kinderszenen" is German for "Scenes From Childhood." This is a 1962 studio recording from New York City, and it's the bonus track from the album Horowitz Live and Unedited.

Schumann's music is often imaginative and autobiographical, and this piano cycle is no exception. I encourage listeners to follow the music (movements are listed below) while retrospecting about being a child—like Schumann did when he wrote Kinderszenen in 1838 :)

Movement 8: Am Kamin (At the Fireside)

Movement 9: Ritter Vom Steckenpferd (Knight of the Hobbyhorse); starts at 1:07

Movement 10: Fast Zu Ernst (Almost Too Serious); starts at 1:46

Movement 11: Fürchtenmachen (Frightening); starts at 3:30

Movement 12: Kind Im Einschlummern (Child Falling Asleep); starts at 5:13

Movement 13: Der Dichter Spricht (The Poet Speaks); starts at 7:00

  • @DasKindespiel si señor

  • Hearing the pedal lift up at the end is a really nice touch.

  • I like the Fûchtenmachen part (3:30) , remembers me the "De Nuremberg à Nuremberg" (from Nuremberg to Nuremberg) soundtrack.

  • Really lovely version...better than Idil Biret in my opinion. My teacher plays these as a show with her partner Gerald Dickens, the great-great grandson of Charles Dickens. Gerald reads exerpts from the famous novels using children as the central character, such as David Copperfield and Oliver Twist, and Liz plays the Kinderszenen...it's magical!! Google Gerald Dickens for more info!
