Summer 2011 - Holmes

This video takes place in three different places: a private residence in Bristol, Indiana; The Riverwalk in Elkhart, Indiana; and the Centre PC in Mishawaka, Indiana. Each portion of the video was a paid event that produced actual results for a client. The clients were each very happy with their final product.

The video is showing the process of which a professional photoshoot takes on meaning. The video that I produced becomes a small snapshot into what an anthropologists can see the background.

Photography in an anthropological sense is very important... It shows the importance into how people want to be perceived, through and by what the culture states. This video will show two types of current trends in photography that I have recently been paid to take: senior and corporate. These are two very different trends; as are the cultures that they belong to.
High school seniors age range anywhere between 16 and 19, and they start getting their pictures done anywhere from the very beginning of their last day of their junior year in high school; through that summer, and then all the way through their senior year, and often through the first month out of high school because they were so busy during the school year that they didn't have enough time to get their photos done.
Most seniors want to look older in their photos, and/or portray what their high school life was like: What their specific culture was. A picture is worth a thousand words; photography goes way beyond language, and large parts of the global community express their life through photos and still snapshots.
It is the photographer's job to maintain an idea about how most seniors are going to want to be portrayed; however, be open for new ideas as they may arise and do as the client wants. Senior student clients a lot of times are asked to do and/or directed to pose in a certain way to be able to portray what many people will recognize as a "Senior Portrait."
The view from future anthropologists of senior photos is and will be that of what the photographer will portray in their photographic evidence. Photography plays a tremendous importance in the telling of cultures. If we want an absolute definition of whom a senior really is... Then all we have to do is look at their Facebook page's photos. If a professional photographer is worth their grain in salt, then they will be able to capture who their clients really are.
Corporate photography is another way that people want to portray an ideal that is not necessarily what they are going to get, but be perceived. What a corporation wants when their employees are being photographed is a sense of professionalism. The people that are being photographed generally are going to be shot all in the same way -- promoting consistency and uniformity -- which makes a sterile cultural bias. The professional world wants to stifle the employee's creativity when taking a professional portrait, and make it all uniform.
