Millions of Pakistani flood survivors already short on food and water have begun the fasting month of Ramadan, marked this year by misery and fears of an uncertain future.

Food prices have tripled in some parts of the country because of damage to crops, roads and bridges, adding to the pain of the 14 million people affected by one of the worst natural disasters to hit the already poor nation.

Government officials visited flood victims on Saturday, after deciding to cancel Independence Day celebrations in light of the tragedy.

Yousuf Raza Gilani, the Pakistani prime minister, defended the government's response to the flooding, saying it is on "such a huge level that the government help looks insufficient".

Al Jazeera's Sohail Rahman reports from Mingora, a city on the slow road to recovery.
