Cat Stevens was a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, educator, humanitarian, philanthropist.
In 1976 Stevens nearly drowned off the coast of Malibu, California and shouted: 'Oh God! If you save me I will work for you'. He says, right afterward, a wave appeared and carried him back to shore. This brush with mortality intensified his long-held quest for spiritual truth.
His brother David Gordon brought him a copy of the Qur'an as birthday gift from a recent trip to Jerusalem. It was Stevens took to it right away, and began to find peace with himself and began his transition to Islam.
During the time he was studying the Qur'an, he began to identify more and more with the name of Joseph, a man bought and sold in the market place, which is how he had increasingly felt, within the music business. Stevens had been seeking inner peace and spiritual answers throughout his career, and now believed he had found what he had been seeking.
He reverted to the Islam at the height of his fame in 23rd December, 1977, adopting his Muslim name Yusuf Islam, and auctioned all his guitars away for charity after performing one last time at Wembley Stadium, on 22nd November, 1979. He left his music career to devote himself to educational and philanthropic causes in the Muslim community.
"Soon will We show them our Signs in the (furthest) regions (of the earth), and in heir own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things?" [Al-Qur'ān, Chapter 41: Sūrah Hā-Mīm, Verse 53].
