Never mind Fowler's hit on Nicholls, THIS was the turning point in the game. Richmond realised that Southby held the defence together in 1972, especially in the last quarter when Richmond almost came back from 10 goals down. Southby. McKay & O'Connell held them out . A great defence is key to winning . Take out their defensive leader & the game is yours. I STILL haven't watched this game.

Neil Balme was also reported once for spitting in Rod Ashman's face. Obviously felt threatened by one of the smallest men on the ground. He was a shit footballer and he will always be remembered as a shit person.

@MrPlonkk I agree on your Waite claims but Nicholls, Jones were supreme match winners.. its a shame Vin Waite didnt belt Balme that day..for all the he-man acting of Waite, in the 73 GF Waite failed in not taking out the thug Balme

i remember when balme paid a visit to princess park circa 1979 and the Blues fans booed him.. they had very long memories for that gutless ,sickening act that occurred in 1973.many said Southby was never the same after this incident..the Blues squared up in 1982 Southby got his just reward with a flag in 79..what goes around etc etc...
