Third in the series documenting my modification to an early model Aurora Silent Diesel generator to provide access to the compression release lever. I've finished the hole and can now reach in and move the lever while cranking the engine. This takes a lot of strain off of the starter, and I'm hoping that it will extend the life of the starter and the battery.
Be sure to create a cover to close the opening before you call the job done. The enclosure helps to manage airflow for cooling the motor, generator, and exhaust, so you don't want to leave the hole open.
I also burned a hole in my sweater with sparks from the cutting wheel. Burning a wool sweater makes you smell like a scorched sheep...
@artcancro Regrettably, I do not have good access to the valve cover. I may have to cut on the opposite side of the hidden top rail to make that happen. My current challenge is a steadily decreasing output voltage. Changing the voltage regulator did not help :(

Looks like you'll also have relatively easy access to the valve cover as well. Have you taken the opportunity to check/adjust your valve head clearances?
Nice to hear that your Aurora is still running strong after five years. I just picked up one of their open frame diesel generators and I'm pleased with it so far.
