I see here a painting that is made on Yuppo paper which is really plastic and not paper. Containment here is obtained here to some extent by cool color here surrounded by warm. That makes it kind of a target, it contains the picture. Also, my whitest white is in this picture; that's a strategy. Now its also a strategy to put your darkest darks somewhere in the neighborhood of the piece of white. For instance, I often tell my students that "look, my shirt is a very light value right?" Here is a piece of white and a piece of dark next to it. That makes the white all the more glorious. The whites in watercolor are what gives us sparkle. Now they don't have to be just blank paper of course, they can be tinted as long as they are separate from these middle values. Now look how light this middle value is and yet the white, which is only a half a value away from it, still is quite legible.
