Herbal Soups To Strengthen, Balance And Relax (48).

Another popular way of taking Chinese herbs is to boil them in soup. Why soup? Soup is a Chinese favorite, especially in the south. The other reason is convenience. You just put the herbs of your choice into the soup you make. There is no need for a special method of preparation.

You may put in any herb you want. However, the following should be noted:
• Chinese herbs have not much effect if taken singly.
• A good combination of herbs should be used for a specific purpose.
• Over 95% of the herbs taste bitter. They will destroy the soups good flavor. So, it is always better to take the herbs separate from the soup.
• Only the remainder 5% of herbs taste neutral, which make them good candidates for soup. Besides, these herbs turn soft after boiling so they can be eaten too.

Since not many herbs can be used in soup to preserve good flavor, their functions are necessarily limited. The following is a list of three popular soup recipes, each serving a specific purpose.

→ Soup to strengthen body, blood circulation, and enhance energy:
1/4 pound of chicken, or sliced beef
5 cups (8-oz cup) of water
5 grams of Gou Qi Zi 枸杞子
5 grams of Shan Yao 山藥
5 grams of Ren Shen 人參
5 grams of San Qi 三七
Boil then simmer for about an hour until one serving of soup is obtained.
If beef is used, add the beef when the soup is almost ready. Beef does not taste good after simmering for too long.

6 grams of Qian Shi 芡實
Boil then simmer for about an hour until one serving of soup is obtained.
If beef is used, add the beef when the soup is almost ready. Beef does not taste good after simmering for too long.

→ Vegetarian soup for calming and relaxation:
1/4 pound of Bok Choi (Chinese green)
1/4 pound of carrots
5 cups (8-oz cup) of water
6 grams of Bai He 百合
6 grams of Hong Zao 紅棗 (red dates)
6 grams of Lian Zi 蓮子 (lotus seeds)

  • That is Korean Red Ginseng as Chinese rarely use Steamed ( Red ) Ginseng unlike the Koreans. Chinese prefers white fresh Ginseng or dried Ginseng , not dried steammed red ginseng. Its heaty and not neutral in qi or energy and nature,
