Gabriel Fauré - SPLEEN (Verlaine) - Gérard Souzay & Jacqueline Bonneau

(Pictures JC)

Il pleure dans mon coeur
Comme il pleut sur la ville;
Quelle est cette langueur
Qui pénètre mon coeur ?

Ô bruit doux de la pluie
Par terre et sur les toits !
Pour un coeur qui s'ennuie,
Ô le chant de la pluie !

Il pleure sans raison
Dans ce coeur qui s'écoeure.
Quoi ! nulle trahison ?...
Ce deuil est sans raison.

C'est bien la pire peine
De ne savoir pourquoi
Sans amour et sans haine
Mon coeur a tant de peine !

  • Wow, I never knew Faure also set this poem to music. I am more familiar with Debussy's. This is beautiful.

  • @Caramellatta Now you know... :-) We are all the time discovering something we didn't know, true? :-) Thank you.

  • Very nice! Beautiful poem!

  • @roccoprch1 Moi aussi j'aime beaucoup les chansons de Fauré... et Souzay... Et le poème de Verlaine est vraiment très beau dans sa simplicité ... :-)

  • 2:42--La rue de la Huchette!!

  • Is there a translation into english, apart from some blasphemy through google translator?

  • With regards to translation, the poem translates well into english. It actually sounds good in english. I would only have to "think" on three spots for the "right" word/phrase

in english. However, thanks for your intention to send a translation. Regards!

  • @nadaniente115a "Very beautiful in its simplicity", very true. I was able to understand/translate your response without any difficulties ( i.e. no use of dictionary).

However, I can't say the same for translating the poem, I was helped (dictionary, etc.).

Although once promising as a student of french, it is all rusty and limited now. Any language is "very much alive", you have to live it. However, your posting is "very much alive", it is very beautiful. Thanks! Regards!

  • beautiful.

  • Magnificent song.
