That's definitely true. I guess I can't deny that having money is a really great asset. I think having supportive parents is just if not more helpful too. So yeah you have a good point that opportunity plays a large role just as much as talent and hard work.
I suppose you're right. The main reason that I was never allowed to do any of that stuff was not because I was that I was a foster child, which means that there were a lot of restrictions placed on what I could and couldn't do publicly, and my foster parent was unsupportive of my interest in furthering and enriching my education, and she only kept me for the money anyway. But having money -- in particular, having highly educated parents -- just having real parents -- is an incredible asset.
@CosmicKitten89 Money has nothing to do with it, it's a result of talent combined with hard work... and it's hardly just a black-tie gala. The gala is only the last event of the entire competition week, and it's after several rounds of judging and presentations. But of course I agree with you that anyone like this needs more media coverage :)
The Intel STS is nothing more than a black-tie gala for the richest nerds in America. However, I do agree that they should get more media coverage; that way, people will aspire to be like them instead of like Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears.
I wasn't a participant in the Intel STS but I was a finalist for the Intel ISEF. I do not think it exactly competes with this particular level of thinking and science but I still find it to be an amazing accomplishment and I enjoyed every minute in San Jose, California the week of the Intel ISEF. A truly profound experience in my life.

Sorry for the mistake; I meant to say "not because I wasn't rich, but because I was a foster child".
