The show F-r-i-e-n-d-s original theme song was "Shiny Happy People" by R.E.M., but was changed later on to "I'll Be There For You" by The Rembrandts. -- IMDb Trivia: Friends (1994 TV series)

@catkisser I was in a band with my brother and cousins from 1993-2008 and this was one of the songs we did. My brother played piano and sang lead on this while I of course sang Kate's part and played bass. Our name was Eponymous, alhtough we were not an R.E.M. tribute band. We did, however, have a lot of R.E.M. songs in our repetoire and this one was in from beginning to end.
I was 16 when the band fromed and "Shiny Happy People" was the very first song my bro and I learned together.
