Off-brand circular polarizing filters that cost a fraction of the price of name brands can be enticing, but do they work well enough? This is the second of 2 field tests on an OEC (brand name) circular polarizer (82mm filter size). Read more at lightforall.blogspot.com

  • You failed to white balance in the video. If you are going to make a professional "test" do it right.

    I plan on posting soon.

  • Ted, if you would see, the video is white-balanced properly but the filter causes the color problems. Next time you post, know what you're talking about otherwise your knowledge is a failure.

  • Although you definitely aren't getting your money's worth - for $25, that could be a fun effect. If it only effects the tint, water, etc... I'm sure for creative purposes, without needing post-production, it could be a fun tool.

But yes, definately go for the 'big names' when getting your filters. Nothing in front of your glass should be el cheapo. I mean, come on, you're using an HVX200. :-P What is that, a $5000 camera? LOLz...

  • With companies looking for ways to cut corners, we purchased the HVX and then decided we needed to curtail spending. So yes, we tried the cheap filter on a 5grand camera. But at least we - and anyone else who sees this - know now.

  • LFA, I appreciate your feedback, and was in no way trying to 'cut you down' for the usage of a cheap filter. Reviews of "bad" equipment are almost as useful (if not more so) than standard 'oh, it was great' reviews. Many people take the safe route of reviewing a well-known-to-be-successful item...

For those who want to save money, but be able to realize what they are getting themeselves into, you're doing a great favor. Kudos.

  • Let me lighten you all up, because it's ridiculous that from 25 commenters, no one realized, that this is NOT a CPF, as in Circular Polarizer Filter, but a CPF, as in COLOR Polarizer Filter, which does just this.

  • The colors aren't a flaw, thats just the polarizars work if yo put some (cheap) type of glass in front of it and aim it to a polarizaed light source. Are you stacking filters or is it just the pol?

  • hey i just got a a CLP filter today, and im confused on what it does. I thought it was supposed to let less light into your camera, so its easier to take long exposures during the day without over exposing the shots, but here in this video it just seems to change color?

  • this looks like you are on mushtooms xD

  • Today I bought a pair of filtersI only paid $20.00 plus tax.One of them is the circular polarizer which I used today when I was taking photos of ships and vessels.I was using my olympus e520 and you actual see see the difference right away. The other filter I did not use today, but it was the ultraviolet filter.I will try to use that tomorrow 11/31/10.

  • @BetesdaIE Screws on the end

  • Wtf? The filter is fine. It only started changing colour when you reversed it the wrong way round. It was fine before in the first few seconds of the video, before you flipped it.

  • Good job thank you,

  • its like putting a cap onto a coke bottle

ps i love the filter lol i want one

  • how do u put it on the lens? just like the lens cap? plz reply anyone!
