Sorry to butt in, but Balut is Chinese. It was introduced by the Chinese to the Filipinos only a few hundred years ago.

For Anthony to not find it enjoyable I feel so proud of myself now for loving it on my first try. Though I will admit I've never eaten above medium mature ones. I like them as young as possible. >_>

Btw, he ate that at Ben Thanh market. A famous, historic but a little over-rated market at the center of HCMC.

Its gross to look at but tastes good, especially with some salt and pepper. I went to this one restaurant last night in Binh Duong province and they prepared it soooo good. They took the duck out of the egg and put this sweet hoisin sauce-based sauce with peanuts on it...... it was so freaking good. And it costed only 6000 dong (about 30 cents).
Food in Vietnam is so good and so cheap. I bought 7 mangoes the other day for 40,000 dong; that's about $1.90.
