Our government is very stupid and very arrogant. In a total collaspe, there will be no power to hold on to. At most our government might have 10 million armed goons facing off against 330 million starving , pissed off , desperate and armed citizens. It will lose any such contest, with the only result is that those that survive will be standing trial for high treason. The best thing they can do is hide out and wait for the situation to burn itself out.

Well what is wrong with martial law ? I mean think about it...just about everytime
there is a protest, there is violence and destruction, sometimes when a sporting team wins, there's a riot, we are on the brink foks, but it's the governments reaction to chaos...remember Katrina ? remember what people were doing...if we don't want martial law, then perhaps we, as people, should start behiving like human beings...we made our bed, now perhaps we may have to actually sleep in this bed.
