My grandfather Joseph Lawlor played with the Debroy Somers band around this time but unfortunately I have no way of finding out which recordings he was on

@jlawlor73 That is very interesting-have looked at a Debroy Somers lp i have but unfortunately unlike other lps it does not list band members.I will ask around for information.I would be pretty certain he would have recorded records with him.Somers band is in the silent "Piccadilly" ,i think from 1928 or 1929and also the 1933 Cicely Courtneidge Musical "Aunt Sally",so you may be able to spot your grandad.I have Aunt Sally on dvd.Would be interested to know more about your grandad.

Early electrics sound as good as vinyl did in the 70's or better. Too bad those steel needles were all they had.

Yes you are correct,people are often surprised when i play the gramophone,on how good the sound quality is,though it does depend on the label and condition of course.I have often said it but Columbias were the best,and why the silent surface process was "ditched" i will never know!

@jlawlor73 Looks like we are both doing the same thing and for a similar reason. My mother is still alive and remembers quite a bit. Maybe our grandfathers moved over to DS after they left Percy Bush. I am investigating films . Already have Piccadilly and there is little to see. Have another contact researching for me. @mic33george Joe Lawlor played sousaphone and double bass mainly. He married my Nan, Lily Lawlor in Brighton in 'secrecy' except DS found out and turned up which caused a media frenzy at the time!! Joe Lawlor died young in the 1950s so hence I never met him. I have become curious about him of late and any information/memoribilia linked to him that I can share with my family would be gratefully received. Can I get a copy of the DVD? Jo

Thank you for your reply. I have a photograph of my grandfather with the rest of the Percy Bush band ...perhaps your grandfather is in it? Are you on Facebook as I could share it with you? I never met him as he died young in the 1950s and have recently been trying to put together family history out of curiosity and for my Dad who was only a young man when he died. Anything you have would be great to see....thank you again. Jo

@jlawlor73 I have details on your grandfather. Mine, Percy Harper, worked with him in the Percy Bush Orchestra. He joined the DS band in 1929. I have your grandfathers signature in a music cabinet and I also have photos. Am currently obtaining a discography
