Brian Kerkvliet of Inspiration Farm in Bellingham Washington shows off an amazing technique of converting funky meat into fresh maggots for chickens.

A bucket on a tripod with some dry hay/grass/straw. There are holes in the bucket to let the flies in and the maggots out. The straw helps to keep the stink down. I couldn't smell anything, but the flies sure seemed to be able to find it.

The maggots go to the bottom of the bucket and the head out the bottom of the bucket to enter into their next stage of devlopement. That's the point where the chickens grab them!

Converting rancid meat to fresh eggs!

  • What exactly is "Black Soldier Fly"?

Is it Really a Major issue in washing the eggs, Washing your hands after every contact with the chickens because of salmonella?

I new to this and we are getting ready to set up for chickens. :)

  • @thevegasbutterfly all these things are covered in great detail at the forums at permies dot com

  • If you like this sorta thing, come on out to the forums at permeees dt com where we talk about anything

  • @fr3d420 we actually delete discussion on politics and religion and a few other things. So it's pretty focused on homesteading and permaculture stuff.

  • Black Soldier Fly is even better.

  • @marthale7 I need to get some black soldier fly stuff on video

  • @atariforever2002 This is a pretty common technique - lots of people feed their chickens this way. I regret that I didn't get footage of chickens eating the maggots.

  • Any concerns with attracting predators and scavengers? I believe crows do like eggs with their rotting meat. A bald eagle hanging about could do a lot of damage.

  • screw the chickens, ima hang this over a pond for bluegills

  • @thevegasbutterfly i previously wrote a whole long paragraph about black soldier fly, but it was over the limit, their is alot of information on the internet, don't be scared because theyre "flies" they don't even have mouths or carry diseases, you REALLY should look into it, theyre very beneficial, and the chickens love them!

  • Haha I live in Bellingham too

  • So,do the chickens eat the maggots out of the bucket?

  • Good idea, thanks for the video.

Just wondering, could you also just cut up the meat scraps and feed to the chickens directly ?

  • Great vid, hope you dont mind me linking to a forum. My father used to do something very similar .

  • Wow! What a great idea. Thank you for this video.
