This has a slow start so please just hang with it. I usually holler Bert's fish call from Sesame Street at the top of my lungs, but I thought to be a little more classy this time. If they'd known I had oatmeal cookies I'm sure they'd have shown up faster.
I made this just for fun, not to prove a point other than I find horses fascinating in any weather, I guess. I tell people my girls are a brunette and a redhead, about 23 years of age, vegans and fine atheletes. They have run races on a professional level and spent many years on the polo fields of NY state in Saratoga and Lake Placid. Espresso, the long legged brunette, was a polo horse in the stable at Skidmore college after playing in polo matches in FL. She went through some hard illness troubles, contracting ETM which is a disease transmitted by possums. She survived and became the mother of a colt, Java, who is in the Saratoga region. Espresso unfortunately then picked up a salmonella virus, lost a lot of weight and was placed on IV fluids. She came back from that but the best place for her was to be where she could just rusticate. At the same time Penny, AKA Miss Piggy (and rightly so) was moving to my house and it became a package deal.
So I have P, an American Quarter Horse, very willing to join in on anything a dumb human would like to try, massively patient with anyone (of any age) on her back, a really savvy polo player, powerhouse and BOSS MARE. Then I have Espresso, long legged thoroughbred, elegence in motion, very chatty when it comes time for morning grain, and ready to run at any excuse. 'Spresso has figured out where to stand exactly so she can see in our front door. She'll be there in the morning, peering, waiting for morning stables. I think she read all of Dick Francis' books when she was recuperating and now expects things to run like clockwork.
The SPCA called about 2 months ago asking for donations for an auction they were planning. I offered Espresso. I mean, really, what a hot ticket, right? A thoroughbred up for auction to help the SPCA! Right? Am I right or what??
She's still here.
Occasionally they will go off into the wooded section of their pasture or down into the back area. My husband and I look at each other and say OMG, the horses have run away! How sad! We'll save on feed and we can shut off the fence! Boo hoo!
Then they come back. We try to act joyful in front of them. :)
This is their second winter outside. They have a run-in off to the right and seem to be doing just fine with plenty of heated water in the tank, hay out twice a day and morning feed with supplements.
And that's how it is here at the RePo Ranch [Re(tired)Po(lopony)]
Thanks :) I just had to have fun with it. Glad I got that across. I'd love to have someone get on Espresso again, she is a very elegant mover. Maybe I can get some more vids of them and continue. I wondered how E would do after all the problems she had. But I'll go out there, below zero, and she is cavorting, bustin' a move, prancing in circles. Maybe it's that ration of Senior Feed she gets every morning...
