Are you an INFP? ESFJ? INTP? ESTJ? What do these types mean, and where do they come from?

Part 5B: Today's video will cover the 7 leading criticisms of the MBTI as a valid psychometric.

Warning: This video is going to be pitched at a more academic level than usual. To simplify some of these arguments is a detriment to all the hard work and research that has gone into personality psychology.

Many of these ideas are rooted firmly in scientific methodology. I have tried my best to briefly explain some of the major ideas necessary, but if there's anything else you're having trouble with please don't hesitate to send me a message.

Again, if you have questions please feel free to send me a YouTube message. If a specific question is asked enough, I will answer it here.

  • What does the actual research say about test reliability? I'm thinking that the vast majority of people online talking about their MBTI results probably never took the actual MBTI.

What does it mean that the MBTI has no scientific basis? What about the factor analysis done on MBTI comparing it to other systems that do have decades of peer-reviewed cross-cultural research? What do you think of MBTI Step II?

  • @MarmaladeINFP: The MBTI tends to have low test-retest reliability, high interrater reliability, and moderately high internal consistency reliability.

  • 4:50 ENTP self-consciousness ftw :D

  • Is the OCEAN any better of a test?

Remove C-L (which is arguably also dependent on the state on which you take it) then you have 16 types. Their basis? Dictionary words that people tend to say describe themselves.

Seems more like a test of synonyms than of personality. But I don't know; maybe there was more research behind it.

  • check out tom ellard musician and video artists his doctorate work a 5D personality video interface based on OCEAN

    watch?v=Gd-HiLdfrjk&feature=sub

  • how are you supposed to take this test without leaning towards who u want to be?? ive gotten intp and i am like that type.. but with mental disorders, like my social phobia its hard to test who i really am.. i could be entp but not know it.... they need to make a more specific test

  • ive taken this and got intp.. thats good.. this test is flawwe im soooo fuuuucccckkkiinnnggg piisssedddd thaaatt thhiisss commmmeeeennntt boxxxx isss slo as fuuuuckkkkk

  • I'm wondering if there is a further personality trait (or maybe some factor of psychological development) that is mixed in with what personality research is testing.

Why do some people test consistently and some people don't? My moods are very consistent (no matter the environment or the situation) and so it makes sense that I test consistently. I'd suspect that other people with more consistent moods would also test more consistently. Furthermore, I'm very self-aware.

  • I can't wait for more research to come out on personality. I suspect there are many subtle nuances that research that can't be tested right now.

I've taken about every online test and always tested as INFP. I took the actual test and also tested as INFP. The last test I took was the MBTI Step II. I tested out-of-preference with the factors of Questioning (T) and Methodical (J), but interestingly the test shows it's perfectly normal for INFPs to test out-of-preference on those factors.

  • Just watched your vids in this series, and after that I got inspired to take the OCEAN. Pretty sweet thanks. I was rather surprised to get a high O in the 90th percentile. I mean, I am the kind of person who can eat the same thing everyday. However, I did take an new personality test simply by you mentioning it.

Nice vid series. Glad to have found you.
