Sheriff Joseph M. Arpaio: An American doing the job he was hired for.

Know as "America's Toughest Sheriff," Sheriff Arpaio has become very controversial for his approach to operating the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office In Arizona. He has a large number of vocal supporters as well as opponents. He does have his detractors and has been criticized by organizations such as Amnesty International and the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union)

The facts are simple, if an alien illegally crosses the border from Mexico to America, Sheriff Joe arrest them. Whats wrong with that? As Americans we need to stand with and support Sheriff Arpaio. He has been involved in drug enforcement, has known Janet Napolitano for 17 years and is immersed in the dangerous situation on our borders.

In 2007 a petition to recall Arpaio from office failed to gain enough voter signatures to get on the ballot. In a survey taken by the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication while the petition was in circulation, nearly three out of four respondents opposed the recall, and 65 percent of the respondents held a positive opinion of Arpaio.

Arpaio is of Italian heritage. His mother died while giving birth to him, and Arpaio was raised by his father, a grocery store owner. He completed high school and worked in his father's business until age 18 when he enlisted in the United States Army.

Arpaio served in the Army from 1950-1954 in the Medical Detachment Division and was stationed in France for part of the time as a military policeman.

Following his discharge from the Army in 1954 he moved to Washington, D.C. and became a policeman, moving in 1957 to Las Vegas, Nevada. He would serve in Nevada only six months before obtaining a job as a Special Agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration. During his 25-year tenure with DEA, he was stationed in both Turkey and Mexico, and advanced to the position of head of the DEA's Arizona branch.

In 1992, Arpaio successfully campaigned for the office of Maricopa County Sheriff. He was re-elected in 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008 with considerable support of the county voters. He married Ava Arpaio in 1958. The couple currently has two children and four grandchildren.
