I had a 1983 Mercedes 300SD Turbo Diesel several years back, and even if it were 32*c out, I still had to use the glow plugs. When the glow plugs failed, I said the hell with it and abandoned the car.

@markt8235 hi Mark, i can see why you think there's no belt on the engine, you can see the circular belt tensioner, that's not actually a pully, it has a belt on, it's not so easy to see!
the compression must be good, it has good power, and starts real good too, i'm going to rebuild this engine, as soon as it gets warmer, i'll get it on video, i think we need more Land Rover technical videos on youtube, don't you?

belter, i had the 2.5 one with the bmw engine in that was sweet as a nut too, but with a vehicle that heavy it did lack somewhat when fully laden and trying to go up a steep hills :/ it got there eventually mind u :) are the 3lts significantly more powerful ? have got a 4.6 rangey lpg at the moment, its sweet these cold mornings[famous last words] suspensions a pain tho, got a leak and have to wait 10min b4 i can drive the bag of shit, considering springs :) what you think ?

the P38? you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned weight, it's an awful lot of weight for a 2.5 engine to cope with, thing is, they would start fine from cold, but would be poor starters from hot! (pump wear on higher mileage engines i think) there;s pros and cons to springs, they have to be a 'jack of all trades' whereas the air springs are more adaptive to a given situation, they are an intelligent system, but rather complex, and prone to problems in later life, as you have found out!
