Part 15 of 15: From the 1 June 1998 performance of Bellini's opera, I Capuleti e i Montecchi (The Capulets and the Montagues)' at Semperoper Dresden: this is the final scene (duet: O tu mio sola speme/ Vivi, ah, vivi). Romeo, thinking that Giulietta had really died, commits suicide by swallowing poison while grieving at her tomb. Alas! She was only faking death and wakes up too late to stop him. After some quibbling the hero expires from the death potion, and the heroine falls dead upon him... apparently from a broken heart. Love does that to you sometimes...

Marcello Viotti/ Kammerphilharmonie des MDR
Vesselina Kasarova (Romeo)
Lucia Aliberti (Giulietta)

Vesselina Kasarova is the Romeo on the RCA Red Seal complete studio-recorded CD set of this opera (R Abbado/Kasarova, Mei, Vargas).

  • such a great recording. I have the radio recording from chicago lyric opera as well, but like this one more. can't wait for my ordered CD to arrive :-). the subtitles help greatly!

  • Me, too! I have the airchecks from the LOC, Paris Opera, and this one from Dresden, and I love this the most. VK is amazing in this show, of course, but Maestro Viotti really rocks from the pit (and the Giulietta of Lucia Aliberti and Tebaldo of Octavio Arevalo are also awesome.

The RCA CD set is a great buy! Hope you will enjoy it! Thanks for stopping by. :o)

  • "Cons: Romeo has to stop singing and die at some point. Bummer." (c)

I always recall your line when listening to this finale. :)

  • Hey! Sometimes I have a feeling that you know my lines better than I do, matie! ;o) But, yep, I have the hardest time letting this Romeo die in peace whenever I turn on the stereo. He's always having to sing his dying song over and over since I can't seem to stop myself from hitting the replay button. Thanks goodness this performance was broadcast and taped!

  • Oh, I can't. I'd be very seriously downed if I listened it a few times in a row. Makes me want to die of a broken heart like Giulietta.

Great job you did with the titles.
