In April of this year, the Columbia City Council voted to remove mobile video cameras from downtown. On June 6, Columbia resident Adam Taylor was brutally attacked and beaten in a downtown parking garage by a group of seven teenagers. The attack was captured by a city-owned video surveillance system installed in the garage.

At the July 20, 2009 City Council meeting, Adam Taylor and his family made a formal request that the council hear public comment at a future meeting and reconsider the camera proposal. The Council voted 3-4 to deny their request.
