Heeeeeeeeere we go!

A bit of a warning: Since I made these videos back before I even did LP's, I didn't really do them in the style that I'm doing now, so it might all seem a little haphazard the way I just jump into things here. I'll list a few of the frequently used commands at the bottom so this might make a little more sense.

"Dungeons of Daggorath" is a pioneering 1982 computer game that can be considered a forerunner of the first-person shooter genre, although no shooting takes place. One of the first games to use a 3D first-person perspective, it was produced by DynaMicro for the Tandy (RadioShack) TRS-80 Color Computer.

The game was written by Douglas J. Morgan and Keith S. Kiyohara, with sounds by Phil Landmeier, in 1980-81. It was released as a ROMpak cartridge for the Color Computer, which limited the size of the code to eight kilobytes, which took several months of recoding to achieve. Despite this, the game features a multi-level maze and has what for the time were advanced sound effects that provide important clues to the locations of monsters.

Despite what are now primitive graphics and sound, the game still enjoys a cult following in the retrogaming community for its challenging gameplay, and has been ported to Microsoft Windows XP and Linux via the SDL graphic and sound libraries.

M = Move (move forward)
T L = Turn Left
T R = Turn Right
T A = Turn Around
A L = Attack Left (attack with what's in my left hand)
G L SW = Get Left Sword (Pick up a sword that's on the ground and hold it in my left hand, this is just an example)
I = Incant
C D = Climb Down
R R = Reveal Right (Tell me what kind of item I'm carrying in my right hand, e.g. a "Torch" becomes a "Pine Torch" or "Lunar Torch" by using this command, unlocking its true power. Otherwise it's only as powerful as the weakest of its type.)

  • Okay, who else remembers those damn scorpions?! By the time you first come upon them, you're only strong enough to reveal the Lunar Torch, which means that you can't even see the buggers unless they're three squares away. And they move fast- super fast- and the only sound they make is that "click" noise. Any time I heard one I would frantically run myself into a corner and wait for it to approach so I could get the first hit.

    Such an awesome game, so far ahead of its time.

  • The very first "3D" adventure game after text-based games, and holy crap was it addicting.
