I think you don't actually believe this but it's certainly an interesting conspiracy theory... But perhaps John's obsession with death and not being the same person is down to the fact that he considers his recovery as a rebirth. Also I've seen photos of John in the 80s and 90s which look very similar to John in the 00s. For instance watch the Saturday Night Live performance of Under the Bridge in 1992 he looks more like today because the drugs were kicking in on his physical appearance.
