Une chanson à couper le soufle !

Yo canto, dice Charles Grenet con su exquisita voz y al hacerlo está nada más y nada menos que confirmando el título de la canción " Je chante."

Your understanding of French is not that bad: the charcater actually kills himself at the end of the song! The song's about a wandering singer who sings for food. The day of suicide he's very hungry because he ate only a bowl of rice left for him by a countess. It's not enough, he's very hungry so he hangs himsself with a string. Then he becomes a singing ghost who haunts castles ans homes. Very strange song...Joyfull tune but quite dark lyrics.

the character didnt want to get arrested but he killed himself yeah

My understanding of French is very slight; do the lyrics really mean the character in the song...killed himself? Or was he just trying to get arrested (for the three meals a day and a bunk to sleep indoors), and unable to think of anything illegal he might do except suicide? (Can't arrest you, friend, you haven't done anything wrong...Oh, yeah? How about this: I killed myself tonight!)
It's an extremely cute, bouncy song to have a serious reference to such a subject.

Such an unusual song! The bare description sounds tragic: a fellow, who is down on his luck, sings for his supper and never gets fed (he can't even get arrested!), until he hangs himself and becomes a ghost!
But it's so slyly funny; so bouncy and cute and utterly adorable, I just love it.

Merci pour poster cette chanson! C'est mon coup de coeur... A mon avis, Charles Trenet est le meilleur chanteur francais du monde. =)
