Black Keys Chapter 38

I refused to move away from him. I'd never leave him. Just let the doctors try to move me. Let. Them. Try.
**End POV**

**Sara's POV**
I waited for Kat to go through the door before I started crying. I knew it was hard enough for her. I couldn't break down in front of her. "J-Joe!"
Joe: *hugs me* I know.
His voice was hollow. Of course it's just as hard for Kevin's family. Speaking of... "W-was Nick called?"
Joe: Not yet. We should do that now.
I nodded, glancing inside again. Kat was sitting in the chair next to Kevin's bed. Her face was completely wet with her tears and her hand was clutching Kevin's hand to her chest. I couldn't imagine how awful this was for her.
Joe: Do you want to stay with her?
"No. I'll let her be alone with him for a while. She needs it right now" I said, wiping my eyes.
Joe: Alright. C'mon then.
He put his arm around me and I put my arm around him and we walked outside to call Nick. I couldn't help feeling worse for Nick. He'd been through everything with aly. And now this! And Aly herself. This was going to be the worst news we could bring.
**End POV**

**Aly's POV**
Nick: Hang on, I'll be right back. *kisses my cheek*
I smiled at him as he walked out of my room to answer his cell. I watched him talking and knew something was wrong. His face was an open book. He was horrified about whatever Joe was saying. Then I got even more worried. There were tears falling down Nick's cheek. He hung up and leaned against the wall. The police officer outside of my room had to help him to his feet before he could come back in. By then, my heart monitor had gone berserk, so there were nurses in my room.
Nick: I'm... back.
I reached up and put my hand against his cheek, catching more tears as they fell. "What happened?"
Nick: It's... Kevin
He fell into the chair again and put his head in his hands. His breathing was shallow and I could tell he was struggling not to completely break down. "Wh... what happened?"
Nick: *looks up at me* He's in a coma.
"What?" I must have misheard him
Nick: He was in a car crash. He's in a coma
"H-he's in a c..coma?" I repeated, trying to make sense of this. No. This couldn't be. This kind of thing happened to those people in those TV shows. Not in real life. No. This can't be real! This has to be a bad dream. But it's not. I'm awake. Kevin is in a coma. I'm in a hospital after nearly being drowned and I can't go see my best friend.
Nick: *puts his head back in his hands* I can't believe this.
"No... I have to leave!" I sat up and reached to remove my wires, but a nurse came rushing in, along with the police officer.
Nurse: What are you doing?
"I can't stay here! I need to go see my best friend!"
Nurse: You most certainly may not
"No! I have to! Coma!"
Nurse: You must stay here
Nick: She's FINE! Why do you keep her here?
Nurse: We... we need to make sure she remains stable!
"Are you sure you're not just draining my money?!" I yelled. "I'm PERFECTLY fine and you continue to run daily tests, adding up how much it's costing me to stay here!"
Nurse: *flustered* You must stay here!
Police: *looks at the nurse* Is that what's going on in this hospital?
The nurse ran and the officer made a quick call on her radio before turning back to me.
Police: I'm Officer Shelly. You're released. I'll get you out of here to see your friend
She called a doctor in and all the needles were removed. I jumped up and hugged Officer Shelly. "Thank you! Thank you thank you!" I grabbed my clothes that my parents had left for me and got changed fast. I took Nick's hand and pulled him from the room. He was barely able to walk, so I jumped into the drivers seat. It was going to be a long drive... The hospital Kevin was at was 40 minutes away. And this silence was starting to choke me. "Nick please say something"
Nick: Thanks for taking me over
"Thanks for helping get me out of there" I answered, trying to force a smile. "I don't know what I'd do without you...." My voice trailed away as I imagined if I was in Kat's place. If it was Nick in a coma. I had to struggle to breathe and look over at Nick at the red light to remind myself that he wasn't in a coma. "Here it is..." I said after 20 more minutes of silence. "Ready to go in?"
Nick: *nods stiffly*
