  • @globalchaos1984 Video Games are now an art form.

  • @baserocklove Doesn't look like any other game I've played before, video games should start being respected as an art form.

  • @InternetLawman Video games aren't required to be marketable. I'm writing a text-based roguelike that certainly isn't very marketable.

  • tower of babble

  • @InternetLawman Please explain what it is that makes film an art form, but prevents video games from being an art form.

Keep in mind that content created to entertain or create a mood or emotion IS art. Being entertaining does not make something less artful.

Keep in mind that interactive art is nothing new.

And keep in mind that video games have the same sort of indie scene concerned with creating innovative, story-driven, or expressive content that you describe with film.

  • @321cheeseman It is so very easy to prove you wrong, that calling it a challenge in the first place is a gross exaggeration . And no, I am not very much inclined to do that.

  • @InternetLawman The only difference between movies and video games is interactivity, and all that implies. I challenge you to prove me wrong.

  • @ThatGastrodon p.3 These art house film that focus more on story telling and artistic expression through stylistic cinematography, acting, and directing typically don't make much money. But that's okay, because the main goal is story-telling and artistic expression. This is where video-games falter: a video-game's main intent is it being entertaining. Good voice-acting, beautiful environments, and great plot lines all serve the same end: and that end is that the video is entertaining.

  • @ThatGastrodon P.2 In regards to the film comment: writers and/or directors generally want to tell a story through film. The writer's and director's main goal is story-telling, but they must also make it profitable because the film industry is still a business, and that's what the studios wants: profit.

Now, my main point is that films can be artistic, but those films that are generally put a high emphasis on stylistic cinematography and visual effects.

  • @ThatGastrodon 1. I never said that video games are incapable of artistic expression: they are. I just don't think that the medium can accurately be described as an art form seeing as that they're limited by the marketability of the game, and by the fact that a video game MUST be entertaining.

Also just because people love developing games, that doesn't suddenly make it artistic: regardless of whether they're AAA titles or indie games. That just means that they love making games.

  • @TSyoutubin Oh I definitely agree. I've bought several comic books and video game art books precisely because they either have a gorgeous painting, or simply because I like looking at the art that goes into making video games and comics.

I also agree that video games can be works of art: that much is undeniable. However, I think, like comics, calling video games an art form is a bit much, seeing as that they're limited by the fact that they must also be marketable.

  • @InternetLawman I sort of get what you're saying--that games are commercial works and not full expression of artists. But there must be some artistic expression because all games would look exactly the same without it. Games use a combination of non-traditional, multimedia art forms, and the end product must then be a work (or works) of art.

I'm sure people don't buy games just to marvel at the artwork, but there is still some great art in both games and comics.
