04/15/08 - Guerilla filmmaker Larry Cohen introduces The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover (1977) at the New Beverly Theater.

This was part of "Dante's Inferno", a two week festival of double features programmed by Joe Dante at the New Beverly Cinema. (04/09/08 - 04/22/08)

Worth noting: I'm not sure why, but Cohen mentions here that Deputy Director of the FBI Clyde Tolson was Deepthroat. In actuality, it was Tolson's predecessor, Mark Felt, who was revealed to be the infamous Watergate whistlebower and it's his name that is cited beneath the newspaper headline at the end of the film, NOT Clyde Tolson's.

Also, the voice you hear at the very end of this clip is none other than John Landis. Apologies that the media card ran out of space or I would've continued the clip.

  • Black Caesar was awesome.

  • @storrs19 How about Bob Hoskins? He did it before in Oliver Stone's "Nixon."

I saw this movie on our local THIS TV affiliate the other day, and I liked it, but I really have to wonder if this wouldn't have been better suited as a TV movie. It seemed to play a lot better that way than it did as a theatrical film.

  • This is a great movie. I dvr'd it from Encore last year and then burned it to dvd since it does not seem available anywhere. Broderick Crawford plays Mr. Hoover wonderfully. Although Cohen changed some names around like McCoy and Webb who were not real names as Hoover's enimies it is still pretty factual but now dated as it was made in 1977. We need a new version but I don't know who we could get to play Mr. Hoover.
