Literacy instruction for English learners begins in kindergarten, at Lorena Falasco Elementary School. The program is intended to be literacy and language rich focusing on sentence structure and vocabulary development. The school's ESL population is around 50% with most classes having a large population of Spanish speaking students whom have not been introduced to the English language before entering the classroom.
With Letters alive, ESL learners are provided with language, sentence structure, vocabulary and background knowledge they may not have had before. On average, ESL students need more visual aids, and more repetition. Practice, modeling, and reality are imperative for ESL students. Letters alive provides a captivating and engaging structure for ESL students to learn from. It provides resources that may not be normally available for these students
