This is the first chantey in Stan Hugill's collection. If memory serves, one can also hear a version of it sung in the Spouter Inn in the film adaptation of Moby Dick.

A capstan chantey. The full song, which is also very old, is also very bawdy. Instead of faking too much I opted to just stop before getting in too deep!

Learned from chantey master Revell Carr and other sources.

Thanks, Krissy! Good luck with your song. Yep, "back in the day" this kind of songs were sung "different every time." I have 5 different versions of this on my channel! It is kind of like a Rap or Blues where each person can do it their own way each time.
