@grandmother1n But Lucille and Carol made thier livings in comedy ,besides portraying Edith Bunker Jean took on more serious roles she wasn't trying to be funny all the time.

I've never seen Jean Stapleton's humor in real life, but she, in my opinion, doesn't come close to Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett, two of the most delightfully funny names in the business! And if you don't know their work, please get one or two of their videos, or else look them up online for their interviews. Beautiful ladies. I always loved the QA period of Carol's show, as her reaction to some of the audience's questions was priceless! ROTF hilarious!

Saw Ms.Stapleton in person once in a play in 1987 called "Arsenic and Lace" wow a totally different role from her TV role as Edith yes a great talent.

i was a child when my mother mentioned that the woman who played edith was named jean stapleton and i remember thinking you mean she's not real? It's so interesting to get the characters perspective from the actress

One of the most brilliant actors ever. She was spot on in everything I have ever seen her do. Love you Jean Stapleton.

What a sweetheart! I love the warm and genuine smiles she gives the interviewer. I watch some interviews and the interviewees are cold as ice . . . not Ms. Stapleton. You can tell she truly enjoys discussing All in the Family, even though it may be the ten-thousandth time she's discussed it. Truly a warm, genuine, kind person. That's why she played Edith so well :o).

I only watch that show for her. "Oh Awwrchie." I love it.

Edith? Birdie? Either way... I love this woman! What an actress! She looks great too!

I love the part about Norman Lear saying that Edith wasn't a fictional character to him because I think Jean Stapleton played her so well that I'm sure a lot of people felt the same way ... and personally, I think Edith should have been written out as having gotten a backbone and divorced Archie.
wow i cant get over her voice being different, got use to the Edith voice, great actress.

Brilliant actress, Ms. Stapleton. Only she could play Edith, and put her in your heart forever. Wish I could personally thank her for so many laughs and tears.
